On the 1st of August 2024, in commemoration of 2024 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), the Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Hon. (Princess) Surah Animashaun FHTI, joined a host of policy makers, leaders, employers and families in Lagos State, to influence and increase awareness on the benefits of breastfeeding.
This year’s WBW is being observed under the theme “CLOSING THE GAP, BREASTFEEDING FOR ALL”, aimed at creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding as well as highlighting the range of services that are available to support individuals on their breastfeeding journey.
In her goodwill message, the Chairman noted the benefits of short and long terms breastfeeding to be: reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, rapid development and high IQ.
“I, therefore, encourage women to breastfeed as long as they can. Remember that breast milk is the gold standard for nutrition, healthy growth, development and protection, she said”.
The week usually celebrated between August 1-7 was also observed at Epe Primary Health Care Centre at about 9am with free medical services to nursing mothers and babies.
Hon. Surah also seized the moment to dole out diapers, wipes, cash gifts, etc. to help lessen the burden of mothers.
She wishes every nursing mother, a memorable exclusive breastfeeding for the health and development of their babies.
